wellllll shiza.
I was in Second Cup this afternoon (oorrr Second..something else according to some good friends.) and I read something, I believe by Hegel about The State and I'd like to recreate the issue right here, but it's just too long and I don't have enough time to type about it.
But here's the thing, it was troubling enough to make me want to be in love for the sake of distraction. That, my friends, is a pretty big mozza ball.
I realize this is a worthless post as I'm not going to go dig up what it was that killed my afternoon, buuuut here's a thought to end on: What is nationalism? What is national-identity? And not just for Canada, though that'd also be a valued response, but globally speaking, what creates the identity of the nation? Does it reside solely in the State, I doubt it, so where is it found within the people?
Let's just say, writing a paper on the subject for Friday is going to well be the opposite of fun.
annd by the way "you have such an earthy home" is not actually a compliment. Rarely is the word 'earthy' alllll that flattering.

hegel, or should i say bradley's hegel, is one of the coolest things i've ever read in the history of philosophy. i think hegel for the most part has been a bit misunderstood to be some sort of crazy nationalist supporter (ala hitler, or stalin, or bad interpretations of marx [who was at one time part of the school of young hegelians]) i think hegel was on to something that not many philosophers of his time could have even grasped. that being community and meaning and history. perhaps more of this in person, no?
it is interesting to me that you bring this "national identity" question up. i have questionned my 'canadian-ness' for some time now. what i've come up with is that it (like so many other things) is absolute bullshit. i don't know what being canadian is, and frankly im not too sure that other people do either. (unless canadian identity is "not being american" then i'll buy that goat.)
patriotism = ignorant nationalism
being "proud to be canadian" might very well be the same thing as saying "go leafs go!" by same, i mean completely useless and materialistic.
this is mostly just talking though. i think for your apartment to be earthy it needs some sort of garden.
bonz
can't believe you were in second you know what...you ass.
hehe. love you kid. adore your mind.
